Aerowaves’ VR initiative met its first audience in Rijeka

14 April 2021

Springback Ringside is Aerowaves’ new Virtual Reality project which gathers a group of spectators together to watch performances followed by a Springback Q&A – a post-show talk with the artists conducted by a Springback writer.

Our partner organisation the Croatian Cultural Centre in Rijeka (Croatia) recently organised the first audience screenings of Aerowaves artists’ works recorded in VR.

At the end of March 2021, the Croatian Cultural Centre (HKD) presented for the first time Springback Ringside to their audience in Rijeka. They watched ‘The Lion’s Den’ by Sabina Bočková and Johana Pocková, which was followed by an online Springback Q&A conducted by Springback writer Beatrix Joyce who interviewed them and opened the discussion to the audience gathered on the stage. On a second evening they enjoyed Joy Alpuerto Ritter’s solo ‘Babae’, who was then introduced by Springback writer Emily May.

Wondering what Springback Ringside looks like?

Watch this TV report from MojaRijeka.hr by Damir Jevtić with subtitles in English to find out more about it. Edvin Liverić (our Aerowaves partner and director at HKD) and Igor Crnković (video designer and technician) explain how this project is being developed and how it is presented.

Springback Ringside, Aerowaves' Virtual Reality project

Springback Production (Enya Belak) and Pilot Media (Igor Crnković) together with some of our partners and artists are researching the possibilities of filming dance in Virtual Reality as a way of documenting work – as opposed to creating work specially for this technology. Far from trying to replace physical and live performance, the project is driven by the question: can we feel kinetic empathy through VR? We are testing this question with En-Knap Španski Borci Cultural Centre (Ljubljana, Slovenia) as our lead partner, the Croatian Cultural Centre (Rijeka, Croatia), Tanec Praha (Prague, Czech Republic) and The Place (London, UK)
